Avatar: spectacular, fabulous, wonderful

I went along today to the local Palace Cinema in Balwyn to see James Cameron's "Avatar" in 3D.  The glasses were loose and it took me about 20 minutes to get used to the depth they create.  At times it felt like watching an animation and at other times the effect is so beautiful you can get vertigo from the flying and diving.  The glasses should be more of a wrap-around so that you don't even know they are there.

This movie has it all: love, battle scenes, good guys, bad guys, environmental messages, greed, humour, nature, spirituality and hope.  There is the usual mix of cliches (the bad army dude, the naive scientist, the morally challenged business person and the hero given a 2nd chance to redeem himself for his past) and the characters are not developed as deeply as they should be.  I think Ribisi is not convincing enough as the guy in charge of the mission.  But this is escapism; an adventure.  This is a movie to take your kids to see - to appreciate nature and to enjoy the adventure.  There is a flying scene which is particularly spectacular and breath-taking.  I'd enjoy this movie whether it is 2D or 3D.  I rate it a 9 out of 10.  Enjoy!
