The earthquake that hit off the coast of Sendai in Japan on the 11th March 2011 lasted several minutes and was a 8.9 magnitude one - the largest ever recorded in Japan.
The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings and evacuations in many countries in the Pacific region. These tsunami waves were recorded up to 10 metres high and travelled up to 10km inland in some places.
Residents within a 20km radius of the Fakushima Nuclear Power Plant have been evacuated due to possible radiation leakage.
