How to Build Your Market Intelligence System

A well designed market intelligence system can dramatically improve your organization's sales effectiveness enabling you to, identify decision makers, develop a prospect list, track industry trends and create competitor profiles. Where do you find this kind of valuable information?

Depending on your industry specialty there are dozens of special databases.  Many of these are “hidden” on the internet and can be expensive to subscribe to.  The good news is that most major libraries provide free access, for example, The Victorian State Library provides free access from home for several specialty databases.

Here are ten databases to start building your marketing intelligence system.

1. Aspect Huntly Annual Reports Online
Provides the annual reports of all ASX listed and de-listed companies dating back to 1995. It also provides access to the full documentation of ASX-lodged announcements from October 1998 to today, including prospectuses.

2. Blackwell Reference Online - Business & Management
Collection of online reference books including encyclopedias and handbooks covering topics in business and management.

3. Business Source Premier (EBSCO)
Full text for over 3000 business journals, some dating back to 1922. International, but mostly US focus

4. Business Who's Who of Australia
Dun & Bradstreet database contains corporate information on 40,000 large and medium-sized public and private companies in Australia.

5. Chinese Companies and Products (Wanfang)
Database of over 180,000 Chinese companies (with minimum registered capital of AUD $840,000). Updated monthly, contains profiles, contact details, products and services. Some financial information included.

6. International Financial Statistics 1950s-
Time series data on international and domestic finance (including commodity prices), economics and exchange rates. International Financial Statistics serves as a standard source of international statistics.

7. Kompass Australia
Australian company directory. Information for selected public and private companies.

8. Kompass.com
International company directory. Information for selected public and private companies, as well as importers, exporters, distributors and manufacturers. This is ideal for conducting international research and identifying overseas targets of opportunities.

9. Proquest Business
Selection of Proquest 5000 databases related to international and regional business, finance and economics. Includes databases for Asian and European coverage.

10. Regional Business News (Ebsco)
This database provides comprehensive full-text coverage for regional business publications in the US.
